A typical inventory for event photography.
A few weeks ago I posted a question on Equine Photo School’s Facebook page. It asked what you thought the total dollar amount of stuff I used to shoot events for Olie’s Images. There were responses as low as $10,000 from photographers who I personally know have more than that wrapped up in one camera and lens. Maybe I phrased the question wrong. Anyway, the following is the answer to the question.
Although the equipment I brought with me to every event didn’t change much, the levels of ink, paper, and other consumables would obviously vary from event to event. I do my best to anticipate sales ahead of time and only carry as much paper and ink as I think I’ll need for the next event or two depending on how close they are in time. Sometimes Amazon would be out of ink or paper and as you know there isn’t a camera store on every corner. So, it’s important to have more paper and ink than necessary for one event in case sales are way more than expected or you can’t resupply between events.

One more thing, there spreadsheet you see below is going to be listed twice. You’ll notice that there is a section of video equipment. You won’t need that if all you do is photography but for some events, we also set up a room for interviews of winners and other video needs of the producer. We didn’t video the events but we did do video during events. This requires more employees who are well versed in video production. I do not suggest doing this in addition to photography unless you’re capable of hiring people who are talented and can handle taking on that task alone while you shoot in the arena uninterrupted.
