Make it Fun!

What is it about photography that motivates you to get out there and go through all the hassle of taking a picture?

  • What is it about photography that motivates you to get out there and go through all the hassle of taking a picture?
  • Maybe that’s not even in the niches of horse and rodeo photography.
  • What do you like to do that isn’t photography related at all?
  • For me, it was disc golf and exploring new places.
  • This shirt for example. It’s a reminder of my time in Glacier National Park.

Pareto Principle (AKA 80/20 Rule)

  • The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes (the “vital few”)
  • Putting it into action in your life
  • Find the 20% of your actions that result in 80% of your revenue.
  • Then fill the 20% of your newfound time to doing things you thoroughly enjoy.
  • Example: look at all the events/rodeos you shot last year. Make a spreadsheet of each of them with the net income associated with each.
  • You’ll probably notice that a huge portion of the overall revenue came from a small group of events.
  • If you dropped the bottom 80% of the events from next year’s calendar, you’ll still have made 80% of the revenue but you now have 80% of your days free.
  • By only working 20% of the time you still bring in 80% of the revue but now you have the opportunity to do the fun things that light a fire in your life and you have room to add big events to your schedule.

Why Make it Fun?

  • Life isn’t about grinding harder or hustling more to get ahead.
  • It might be scary to chop off so much of your schedule. Many of us use “Being Busy” as a badge of honor in our lives.
  • For many of you listening you might feel guilty about having this much “free time”.
  • I assure you that if you reframe your thinking, life gets really enjoyable real fast.
  • Let’s say you are making $100k a year with your photography but you’re using every weekend to do so.
  • If you only shot 20% of the weekends you’ll still make $80k a year but now you’ll have 80% of the weekends to do something that you love to do.
  • Image how good it would feel to do something nice for yourself or someone else?
  • This doesn’t have to be selfish. You could volunteer or use your talents to do some good in the world.
  • I read about a photographer who would go to her local pound a few times a month to photograph the dogs so they had a better chance at adoption at no charge. Just a kind thing she could do with her time.

Summary

  • What is it about photography that motivates you to get out there and go through all the hassle of taking a picture?
  • It might feel like taking a 20% pay cut might hurt too much but I think you’ll find that by focusing on the parts of your business that generate the most income you’ll soon find that you’re doing more of those activities and thus increasing your income in a big way.
  • You might feel like you’re being a good person by saying yes to every opportunity but you’re actually saying no to everything else.
  • Being more intentional with your time will lead to big results but more importantly, it will lead to a happier you.

Thank you!
